The Sisters Were Famous on YouTube
Many people all across the globe have come to love the sisters who star in the show, 1000-lb Sisters. But did you know that Tammy and Amy were famous on YouTube before TLC created a series that revolved around their lives. You read that right! Amy started a YouTube channel in 2011, making lighthearted videos mainly for her and her sisters’ entertainment.
But when the sisters took on the “Chubby Bunny” challenge in 2014, it went viral. Racking up 1.8 million views. In 2016, Amy had another hit video that went viral, accumulating 7.4 million views. This proved that the sisters were creating a lot of public interest, which further piqued the interest of TV producers everywhere.
The Sisters Have Many Online Bullies
Just like everyone who has any kind of online presence, the sisters are no strangers to internet trolls. In fact, they receive a lot of hate both in their YouTube comments section and on their Instagram platform. But the girls seem to take it with a pinch of salt, often making jokes about their haters.
Amy made an entire YouTube video in which she reads her hate comments and responds to them directly. This is a great way to tackle the hate that comes with having an anonymous following. But the women also have loyal fans that stand up to the haters in posts of their own. Having an online following is wonderful because it connects you with good people, but there are always a few bad people that come along with it.
Tammy Faced Serious Health Issues
Considering the fact that Tammi weighed over 600 lbs at the start of the show, it’s not surprising that she faced some serious health issues, as well as tension within the family. When the show started, she hadn’t left the house in over six years except to visit the hospital due to her lack of mobility. She was completely unable to do anything for herself, which added to the tension within the family.
She opened up in an interview about her health struggles, saying that her motivation to lose weight was purely for health reasons. In the past, she had suffered from two blood clots, pneumonia, a couple of medical procedures, and gout. She was simply tired of always being ill and wanted to document her weight loss journey for the whole world to see.
Tammy Reveals a Dramatic Weight Loss in 2023
After a stunning weight loss process and the removal of a trach tube, Tammy is now looking happier and healthier than ever. She has recently shared new selfies on her social media and has announced that her tracheostomy — which is a hole that is surgically created in the neck and windpipe - had been removed and was replaced by a thinner one.
Hundreds of fans have expressed their admiration for Tammy's astounding progress. We can only hope for good things for her in the upcoming future. You go, girl!
The Lack of Mobility Didn’t Only Affect Her Physical Health
Tammy’s lack of mobility and health issues meant that she could never leave the house. This didn’t only affect her physical health, but her mental health took a huge knock from the isolation. In 2019, Tammy told People magazine that she had been on the brink of committing suicide because of the health issues she was facing.
Instead of killing herself, she used that moment as motivation for turning her life around. She said, "I had a feeling that if I didn't make changes now, I wasn't going to live past 35." After starting the 1000-lb Sisters show and attempting to lose weight, Tammy has made some huge changes in her life. She said, "I don't feel like I have to wear a mask or hide my body when I leave the house anymore, I'm not afraid to let people see me."
The Sisters Weren’t Always Big
The sisters weren’t always larger than life, in fact, Amy claims that they were of an average size until they reached the age of 10. This is when their grandmother passed away. She said, "My mom worked two to three jobs at a time, and my grandma was basically our mom. When she died, our whole world changed."
They then started eating easy-to-prepare meals like frozen pizza and ready-made ramen. They turned to food as a way of comforting themselves during a difficult time, and they just never stopped. Although they know a lot more about nutrition these days, they still sometimes make unhealthy choices. They explain that unhealthy food is a lot cheaper than healthy food, making it a lot harder to make the right choice.
The Show Promo Video Received Mixed Reviews
When TLC announced that they would be releasing a show called 1000-lb Sisters and released their promo video, they received very mixed reviews. Some said they found it sad, some said they were “grossed out”, but everyone seemed a little appalled about the network's plans to release the show.
One woman took to Twitter to say, "not trying to judge these women, but when you're in that position WHY would you make Lasagna, Chicken and Dumplings, two Desserts, and a Peanut Butter and Mayo sandwich for dinner?" When the show aired for the first time, however, the reviews were a lot more welcoming. One fan, saying, "I was really trying not to get locked into another reality series in 2020 but this 1000-lb Sisters from @TLC already has me hooked.”
The Two Put on a Real Show
For the promo video, the girls took on the challenge of creating “dressed bananas” before sitting on the porch to have a chat about how they felt people would judge them. They knew that people were going to tell them not to eat the banana because they didn’t need it, they then had a laugh together and continued to eat.
The video ends with the two throwing pies in each other's faces, like a true food fight. It was this that was criticized widely as the public seemed to think the sisters both waste and consume far too much food. According to public opinion, the two women were creating their own hell that they chose to live in. But when the actual series came out, it did a whole lot better than was predicted after the criticism the promo video received.
The Girls Wanted To Reveal Their Real Life
While the girls were YouTube famous before they had a TV show, they always wanted a reality TV show that would allow them to show off the struggle of their daily lives. This was just not possible on YouTube. Because of this, their YouTube followers reached out to TLC to ask them to create a TV series about the two.
They wanted to share more of their lives with a bigger audience. Amy wanted to share her daily struggle of wanting a baby but not being able to have one because of her obesity. Doctors told her that she wouldn’t be able to conceive until she lost weight. Amy also wanted to show the world how much her husband has to help out because Tammy is unable to move or do anything for herself. The two have been Tammy’s sole support for many years now.
The Sisters Are Serious About Their Goals
The sisters are very serious about their goals, telling People magazine that they have cut out sugar and are on a strict low-carb high-protein diet. They are doing this in the hopes of getting healthy. They have also started exercising more regularly. While Tammy has started swimming, Amy takes long walks with her husband in order to lose weight.
The two sisters are feeling a lot more confident in themselves since the start of the show. They know that they are still obese, but they don’t feel as ashamed as they used to. Amy said, "I can go to the store and not worry about my looks because I feel good about myself regardless of what other people say about me.” And that’s the kind of confidence that we all need in our lives.
The Two Sisters Changed Their Diets Completely
One of the biggest lessons the sisters had to learn was what was ACTUALLY good for them. They learned to substitute their favorite comfort foods for more healthy choices. While Amy said that the food part was okay, there was something that she was struggling with. She said, "The sodas were really hard. But I ended up doing it and I haven't had a soda in what, four months now?"
Tammy agreed that giving up soda was really challenging, but that she’d learned to substitute them for either water or coffee. While neither of them is perfect, Tammy said, “I mean, I'm still having trouble giving up soda and fried foods, but I think I'm doing a lot better than what I used to do.”
1000-Lb Sisters Brought Them Closer
The TV show is something that brought with it a great deal of fame, which is something that’s difficult to handle. Especially when it came about so fast. It gives viewers a glimpse into the day-to-day life of what the sisters are going through. But the two say that the TV program is something that actually brought them closer together.
Tammy said, "I think this has brought us closer together in a sense that we know what the other one is going through, but we just know that the other one is going through the same thing." They are grateful for the opportunity that they have to share their lives with the world, saying “They see more of how our life is and what is going into making better choices and everything, from where on YouTube they don't see as much of what goes on behind [the] scenes."
A Hit From the Begining
The 1000-lb Sisters was a hit from the very beginning, even making the front page of their local paper. Tammy shared an image of the front page of the newspaper on Twitter so that her fans could see it. The response was overwhelmingly positive and many fans reached out to her to tell her just how proud they were of the new star.
One of her fans Tweeted her to say that she was in a very similar position. She said, "I'm trying to lose weight due to depression so I know how challenging it can be. Just wanted to let you know that I'm so proud of you. You really touched my heart in ep2 ... You've got this Tammy." After the positive response, Tammy thanked her followers for all the support on her very difficult weight loss journey.
Fans Didn’t Think There Would Be a Second Season
The ratings for 1000-lb Sisters were really good from the very beginning, in fact, it was the 14th most-watched show the very first evening it aired. The second week that the show aired, it moved up to the eighth most-watched show of the evening. Despite the good rating, the sisters seemed to provide mixed signals on whether there would be another season.
On the night that the finale of the first season aired, Tammy took to Twitter to thank her fans for tuning in. When a fan asked if they would return for a second season she said no. But just a week later, a fan asked the same question and her response was very different. She said, "We're not sure just yet they haven't told us anything but no offense and not trying to be rude but even if they do tell us we won't be able to tell anybody else but keep your fingers crossed that we do get a season two.”
The Teaser for Season Two Was Gripping
The teaser for season two of the show was absolutely gripping. After season one, Amy managed to lose enough weight to undergo bariatric surgery. And just four short months after the surgery, she had an announcement to make - she was pregnant and ecstatic about it. While this was good news for Amy, her sister Tammy was less than pleased.
The doctor had warned Amy not to get pregnant until at least two years after the surgery as it could be very bad for her health, but there she was just four months after surgery with a bun in the oven. Tammy said, "When Amy told me she was pregnant, I didn't know really what to say, other than like, 'Really? Are you freakin' serious? You know you're not supposed to be pregnant right now."
Amy’s Interesting Baby Registry
Amy’s baby registry was just about as quirky as she is. How do we know this? Well, she put it on Amazon for all to see in the hopes that her family, friends, and fans would purchase a gift for the baby that was expected to arrive in January of 2021. So what did she add to her baby registry?
While some of the items were the usual kind that most mums-to-be would need, there were also a few out-of-the-ordinary products. A vibrating baby chair that assists with breastfeeding was among them. Some of the other gifts included a baby onesie that reads “Stephen King Rules” across the front. There was another onesie that depicted the character Chuckie holding a knife - possibly a little violent for a child, but Amy didn’t seem to think so.
Tammy Dated Phillip Redmond
At the start of the show, Tammy relied heavily on Amy and her husband to look after her as she couldn’t do anything for herself. But things changed when she got a new boyfriend. Unfortunately, Jerry Sykes turned out to have a wife, so the relationship didn’t last for very long.
After the disaster that was her relationship with Jerry Sykes, she started dating Phillip Redmond. He helped Tammy a lot more with her health struggles and was there for her in times of need. However, they ended up splitting because Redmond said that "he didn't want to date anyone under 300lbs." In November 2022, Tammy Slaton and Caleb Willingham tied the knot at Windsor Lane Rehabilitation Center where they met. "You all knew me as Tammy Slaton, but now you'll all know me as Mrs. Tammy Willingham," Tammy said. "I'm married now!"
Tammy Slaton Got Covid-19
It seems that the 1000-lb Sisters couldn’t escape the dreaded coronavirus. In November of 2020, Tammy caught Covid and was suffering through it for three weeks. For half of that time, she was in hospital receiving extra oxygen as she had also been suffering from pneumonia. The fact that Tammy is morbidly obese means that she is at a much higher risk of being hospitalized for the virus.
Toward the end of her hospital stay, Tammy made a short YouTube video that consisted of just 58 seconds. In the video, she tells fans that she was struggling with her health but that she was doing much better and expecting to be released soon. The update made fans start to panic, but Tammy put her fan's nerves at ease, letting them know that she was alright and on the mend.
Amy Had Some Strange Pregnancy Cravings
In January of 2021, Amy uploaded a video of herself and her sister sitting down to chat over a large quantity of food. They started to chat about Amy’s strange pregnancy cravings and the concerning combination of foods that she would put together. Just then, Amy indulged in one of her strange cravings for the audience to see.
She took a peppermint patty and put it right on top of a strawberry before popping it into her mouth. Then Tammy decided to give her a dare. She suggested a peppermint patty and an eggroll. Amy didn’t even hesitate before popping them both into her mouth. Although Tammy was disgusted, Amy felt that the combination was actually rather good. We’ll rather take Amy’s word for it than actually try this combination for ourselves!
There Was a Death in the Family
In January of 2020, the 1000-lb Sisters experienced the loss of a loved one that absolutely devastated them. Their stepfather, Robert Rednour had passed away at the age of 62. He had been a volunteer firefighter for many years and a full-time firefighter for the last five years of his life.
Robert had been their stepfather for seven years when he passed away, marrying their mother in early 2013. His obituary gave viewers an insight into what Robert Rednour was like, it read, "He loved his dogs, enjoyed fishing, sightseeing, and bird watching." After a few days of silence on social media, Tammy took to Instagram to share that the girls had experienced a death in the family, so they were taking some time to mourn their loss.
The Title of The Show Is No Longer Accurate
At the start of season one of 1000-lb Sisters, Amy weighed 406 lbs while Tammy weighed 605 lbs. But over the course of the first season, Amy managed to lose 125 lbs, leaving her at a weight of 276 lbs. While Tammy did manage to lose some weight, going down to 550 lbs at one point, she quickly shot up to 597 lbs before the start of season two.
While Amy is taking her health very seriously, Tammy is struggling to stick to a diet and exercise regime but she better start taking it seriously soon. A doctor told Tammy that if she doesn’t lose the weight, her chances of dying within the next five years are as high as 80%. If that isn’t enough to motivate her to get moving, then we’re certain that nothing will!
Amy Had Surgery But Tammy Didn’t
One of the main goals in 1000-lb Sisters was to document their weight loss as they both had the goal of trying to lose enough weight to get bariatric surgery. Amy managed to lose over 100 lbs in the first season, qualifying her for bariatric surgery. Things didn’t go so well for Tammy, however. She managed to lose 50 lbs, but then immediately put it back on. She didn’t qualify for the surgery. This left her feeling unmotivated and disappointed.
While many fans felt sorry for Tammy, there were many others that said that she always plays the victim but is the only one to blame for her own problems. She doesn’t stick to any diet or workout plan, even leaving rehab for food addiction early because she didn’t want to stick out the journey. This leads many fans to believe that she’s simply not willing to work hard enough at her goal.
The Sisters Don’t Get Along With Their Mother
It was clear in season one that the sisters don’t get along with their mother very well. It seems that they have always had a strange relationship. In her first appearance in the show, she was completely unsupportive of the girl's weight loss journey.
She told Tammy that she was sure she didn’t have the motivation to stick with any kind of diet plan. While this may not be the nicest thing to say, it seems that Darlene Rednour knew her daughter very well, as Tammy was the sister that simply couldn’t stick with any kind of diet plan or exercise routine. Needless to say, Darlene did not make an appearance in season two of 1000-lb Sisters.
Tammy Identifies As Part of The LGBTQ Community
While this is something that many fans are unaware of, Tammy actually identifies as being a part of the LGBTQ community. In February of 2021, Tammy announced in an episode of 1000-lb Sisters that she is pansexual. She said, "Love is love. I would date anybody whether they're transgender, straight, gay."
Previously, Tammy identified as bisexual, but after having a conversation with one of her friends, realized that pansexual is a label that fits a little better as she would date someone who was transgender as well. While you may have assumed Tammy to be single as she hadn’t left the house in six years, she has actually had a number of relationships during that period.
What Is The Bulge On Tammy’s Forehead
When the show first aired, many people were curious as to what the bulge was that was so prevalent on Tammy’s head. It may surprise viewers that it isn’t actually a medical condition. Instead, it’s due to her weight.
The bulge on Tammy’s head is called a fat socket and appears in some individuals who are either obese or morbidly obese. So the fact is that if Tammy manages to lose enough weight, the bulge on her forehead might actually go away.
Tammy Speaks Candidly About Her Break Up With Phillip Redmond
Tammy spoke very openly about her breakup with Phillip Redmond. She said, "I broke up with Phillip because I was tired of him getting mad over every little thing.” She then went on to say that she’s open to meeting new people. She said, "My door's always open to talking to people. And if something works out, then it just works out."
She said, "I don't talk to that many people as I used to. I am trying to be more careful, but every day, I get a comment like, 'Hey baby, you cute. [I] wanna take you out.' " She said that she is not looking for anything specific, rather, she just wants someone who is going to make her happy. If Tammy and Amy's life intrigued you, you'll love Destinee's story. Destinee weighed 600 lbs until one day she decided enough was enough and took control of her life...
Destinee Thought Her Health Was a Lost Cause Until She Had a Realization
Losing weight can become a long and difficult journey in a world filled with diversions, whether they're emotional or physical, and for someone who battles with internal struggles, this journey can prove so much harder. This was the case for Destinee, a young woman who just wanted to fill normal in her own skin after many failed attempts.
After experiencing a lot of traumatic experiences during her upbringing, Destinee turned to food cor comfort. This went on for quite a while until she had decided to pull herself together and take back the control she had lost over her life. This is her story.
This Is Destinee, and She Is Seeking Hers
Meet Destinee. You may recognize her if you watch the TLC show, My 600 Lb. Life. Last November, Destinee showed up on the program and began enchanting hearts immediately. You see, Destinee never felt like she fit in-- at school, among friends, and even within her own body.
Destinee was actually born Matthew, and she is the second transgender woman to participate in My 600 Lb. Life, a show that aims to help morbidly obese Americans lose weight, keep it off, and find their own happiness. Destinee appeared on the show's seventh season and immediately developed a cult following.
Not a Show Without Controversy
My 600 Lb. Life has been airing on the TLC television network since 2012, where it has gained both a following and many scandals. Show participants must be over 490 lbs (220 kgs) and must be committed to losing weight. Each episode follows a year in the life of a participant, although the first season gave participants seven years.
Each participant is given bariatric surgery-- usually either gastric bypass or a sleeve gastrectomy-- to set them on their weight loss journey. The average participant loses anywhere from 200-300 lbs, providing hope to many and proving that anyone can take up a healthy lifestyle-- even when it seems impossible.
Is It Just a Feeding Fest For the Morbidly Curious?
But since its inception, My 600 Lb. Life has been followed by scandal. Many fat-activists claim the show is a modern-day freak show, where the average person can gawk at people who are so mentally unsound, they abuse their bodies. Activists also claim the show does not help these troubled people in the long run.
At least six former participants have died during or shortly after their episodes were filmed. Many of these deaths were as a result of their weight, although none were as a result of their weight loss. Proponents for the show say that showing this grim reality of morbid obesity educates viewers on why it's important to maintain a healthy weight.
A Troubled Upbringing for a Wonderful Person
But let us get back to Destinee. As a young person, Destinee was brought up in foster care and developed bad eating habits as the result of an emotionally turbulent childhood. Born to a teenage mother in a biracial relationship, Destinee's mother got no support for her three kids. By the age of four, Destinee and her two brothers had ended up in foster care. At the age of nine, Destinee (then Matthew) was over 150 lbs, and by the age of fifteen, she weighed 350 lbs.
By the time Destinee came out as transgender at the age of 22, she weighed over 400 lbs. Five years later, she appeared on the show at a grand total of 669 lbs. Destinee knew that it was time for a change, but she did not even know where or how to begin.
A Beautiful Girl With a Lot of Problems
After her horrible upbringing, Destinee was still struggling. When she, as Matthew, came out as gay at eighteen, not everyone in her sprawling family accepted it. And when she came out as Destinee at the age of 22, things simply got worse.
Right before TLC began filming the show, Destinee had suffered another horrifying situation: her brother, who she was very close to, died in her arms. Anthony had just come back from the hospital after minor surgery but wound up having a blood clot. Destinee blames herself for her brother's death, by saying if she were more fit, she could have better cared for him.
She Was Tired of This Life
Destinee's depression was severe at the beginning of her episode, and she described her life as laying in bed, waiting to eat, while the simple act of getting out of bed was exhausting for her physically and emotionally. 'Food is the only thing I have to turn to," she confided, and sadly shared that "[she] can feel it killing [her]."
"My body can't take getting any bigger than I've already let it" she added, "they're going to be burying me next." But Destinee was ready and committed to making a change. In charge of her sexuality and her gender, now it was time to take charge of her weight and be the beautiful woman she always knew she was on the inside.
Now, It's Time to Meet Dr. Now
TLC's program follows. Dr. Younan Nowzaradan, also called Dr. Now is a celebrity bariatric surgeon who is committed to helping morbidly obese patients, like Destinee, lose weight, get into healthy routines, and live their best lives. Destinee traveled to Houston from her home in Louisianna to meet with Dr. Now and begin taking the first steps into her new world.
Reportedly, less than 5% of Dr. Now's patients wind up conquering their challenges and losing the weight they need to live a healthy life. With the crucial support of her sister and mother, Destinee was ready to make some serious changes.
The Struggle Was Real
Destinee did not have an easy time whatsoever. Before her surgery, she made a goal of losing 80 lbs within the first two months. But after her mother got sick with heart problems, Destinee made some bad food choices in order to comfort herself. She only wound up losing 24 lbs.
Dr. Now told Destinee he was sorry for all of her problems, but reminded her that stress was always going to be a part of her life. No matter what was going on, she needed to find a way to deal with it in a healthy manner. "You're not showing me there is any real desire to put effort into saving your life," he told the frustrated woman, before giving her one more chance to lose that 80 lbs before he would approve her surgery.
But Things Didn't Go as Planned
After two more months of hard work, Destinee begged Dr. Now to permit her once more to make changes. While she was working hard, Destinee didn't feel that she was quite ready. But by the third month in her journey, she began to have severe stomach troubles. Her mom made her go back to Dr. Now, who took this pain very seriously.
Dr. Now discovered that while Destinee was working hard, she had barely lost any weight at all-- only about 17 lbs. He checked her for physical problems and determined that her pain was coming from binging: Destinee was doing well on her diet, but whenever she faced emotional troubles, she would overeat.
She Needed to Fix Her Emotional Trauma Before Her Waistline
Dr. Now has dealt with many patients like Destinee, and he knew exactly how to help her. He arranged for her to begin meeting with a local therapist, knowing that psychotherapy would help her get her emotional health into proper order so that she could begin working on her physical health.
Dr. Now told Destinee that he thought she was relying on the surgery to heal her completely, which is a setup for failure. The surgery can only help so much-- the rest of it has to be done by the patient. If Destinee can't manage to heal her emotional hurt, she would be kicked out of the program and never receive her surgery.
Therapy Did the Trick
Destinee soon started therapy, and really hit it off with her therapist. Dr. Lola Clay. "You have to give yourself permission to be who you are, no matter what others think," was the lesson repeated over and over. "You're more significant than the body that you're in."
Her work with Dr. Clay helped Destinee to cement her identity and also find things to work on and move towards. Dr. Clay helped her look back on her past and solve the issues that lead to all of her weight troubles-- such as losing her brother. Most importantly, she taught Destinee how to give herself permission to be both happy and healthy.
This Time, She Was Determined to Succed
After her first two months' failure, she decided to change her environment completely-- by moving to Houston. Living in Louisianna made it difficult to change her bad habits. And being in Houston meant she was closer to Dr. Now, making it easier to get better help. Dr. Now requires patients to have family living with them-- but Destinee knew she would be better off alone.
Once she was by herself in Houston, Destinee really buckled down on eating well and exercising. By the end of her first year working with Dr. Now, she was permitted to have gastric sleeve surgery, which dropped her down to 440 lbs. It may not seem like much, but she lost over a third of her original body weight to get there.
She Lost 220 Lbs. By the End of Her Episode!
The picture below is not a MySpace angle or even a Snapchat filter. After her 220 lb. weight loss, Destinee looks like a whole new person. But even more important, she feels like a whole new person.
Where many of the pictures of her prior to her weight loss showed a sick, young woman, lying in bed and not taking care of herself, now, you can tell that her confidence is soaring. She wears makeup. She dresses up nicely. And most importantly, she smiles and looks beautiful while doing it.
Before and After From November
These pictures were shared on Destinee's Instagram account not long after her episode aired. Seeing the number 220 lbs is one thing, but seeing the actual, physical difference between the Destinee before and the Destinee after is absolutely stunning. With her confidence skyrocketing, nothing seemed to hold her back anymore.
Now that she knows weight loss is possible and she knows how to do it, she feels like she can do anything she sets her mind to. And her positivity is infectious, as you will see. Those who have been following her journey since the beginning continue to follow her-- whether she's having a good weight loss day or still struggling.
Her Fan Following Has Grown As Her Weight Has Dropped
A single look at any of Destinee's social media will prove that fans are super involved in her continued success. Often, they use these spaces in social media to talk about their own, similar troubles, whether it be coming out as gay or transgender to their family, or dealing with their own weight issues.
And Destinee, positive and loving as she is, is only too happy to reach back out and comfort her fans. She believes that sharing her journey will help countless others come to discover their own, true selves.

A Gorgeous Queen, Living Her Best Life!
This little fan found Destinee at her job at Lowe's Home Improvement and asked for a snapshot. Destinee appears to have lost even more weight, and she's not only looking like she is taking better care of herself is that she is happy in her new body.
One of Destinee's biggest fears was losing her curves as she lost weight, or losing the feminine form that the extra weight granted her. It's clear to see that Destinee still has, 'all the right curves in all the right places,' despite her dramatic weight loss. A true success story!
